curiouser and not so curiouser

yesterday i came across a PC that would stop responding every time i tried to open IE, outlook, outlook express or system restore. data error report didn’t really help, it just gave me an “event type: inpage error at c0000015″. virus/spyware scans came up clean, chkdsk corrected a couple of disk errors but didn’t fix anything. looking at the application log pointed me in the right direction - mshtml.dll was inaccessible. the usual online resources recommended contacting MS via telephone for a hotfix, reinstalling the machine, replacing the hard drive, uninstalling SP2, etc. before doing any of that, i went to dll-files.com (sorry, pop-ups galore), downloaded a clean copy of mshtml.dll, dumped it into the windows/system32 directory (and renamed the old extension to mshtml.bak) and restarted. everything works normally and i avoided the hassle and timesuck of hardware replacement and software reinstallation. yeah, you know i’m your hero.
