my initial exposure to M.I.A. was critics’ darling arular and despite having utterly no sense of funk or rhythm, i fell in love with that record. a bunch of remixes and mashups later, i finally got around to checking out the M.I.A. / diplo: piracy funds terrorism, vol. 1 mixtape and it’s awesome, if only for hearing her rap over dead prez’ ‘hip hop’ or spout the line ‘i salt and pepper my mango’ over salt-n-pepa’s ‘push it’ in the diplo mix of ’sunshowers’. brilliant.

this weekend, there are not one, but two shows with the heady lineup of spoon, american music club & mary timony in nyc. they’re relatively pricey - saturday at the nokia live theater in times square ($23.50), sunday at the warsaw in brooklyn ($22.50). gas, tolls and ticketmaster’s $6.75 surcharges aren’t making the trip any more appealing. but man, i love these bands. hmmm, what to do, what to do!

update: looks like a couple of us are going to the sunday show at the warsaw. who else wants to go?

i’m having a tough enough time justifying paying $30 for a ticket, much less a $50 one. it’s the principality of the thing, smokey!
