for monica’s birthday, a bunch of us went to scenic carman ave. in camden nj to check out the philly roller girls‘ first exhibition match sunday night. i’ve never seen roller derby before so it was a new experience. a TON of people came out and it was such an amazing cross-section of subcultures. punkers, rockabilly types, hip hop dancers, hipsters and families were all in attendance. as for the game itself, it’s a little bit hard to follow in terms of scoring but you end up cheering more for the over the top emcees, mascots & rollergirls (mo pain? violet temper? you can’t beat that!), abundant fights and spills galore anyway. i have a bunch of photos posted to my buzznet for your perusal. for the paltry sum of $10 (includes free skate rental and open skate), it was a lot of fun and i recommend checking them out once their season gets underway.
