closing out 2005: my current project is switching all the workstations and servers over to our new 100/1000MB network. yep, we’re stepping into the late 20th century. i started by plugging in a few machines just to make sure the switches worked. then my intern and i went down to the lab. he started switching the lab PCs over while i tried my luck at moving the fiber to the new hardware. no luck. i tried about ten different things trying to get the fiber modules to communicate.

right before contacting 3com tech support i said to myself, i wouldn’t put it past the jokers that installed this fiber run four years ago to have done so backwards. it sounds like a weird assumption to make since SC couplers only fit one way but after breaking them open and plugging each connector in the wrong order, the LEDs came right up and i had a full link between switches. there’s two hours of my life i won’t be getting back anytime soon. ha, i felt the same way after watching star wars episode III this year.
