adventures with ubuntu

i have an old dell latitude C800 laptop that chugs along with XP installed. it’s serviceable but (my assistant) james has been suggesting that i try out ubuntu, aka “linux for human beings”. it installed with mixed results:
i recommend downloading the text-based installer vs. the live cd, especially if you’re going to try and install [...]

came into work and our main server was in a loop of boot, finding network connections, “service or device driver failed to start”, BSOD w/ the following STOP error:

c000021a (Fatal System Error)
Windows Logon System Process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0×00000080 (0×00000000 0×00000000)
got into safe mode, nothing in the event viewer. rebooted and loaded [...]

a few years ago i built a linux webserver out of an (what’s by now) 11-year old dell optiplex. the thing is rock-solid, never crashes and - fingers crossed - has been secure for the most part. anyway, i <3 my linux server, except for those one or two times a year where i *do* [...]

next-gen x

let me preface this by stating that i haven’t bought my own system since the PS1. over the years all my consoles have been gifts; my father-in-law won an xbox and gave it to me, matt & kellee gave me their gamecube and just last month, monica got me a PS2 (god of war could [...]

gahh!

probably my second worst day of work since the mail server self-destruct/rebuild this past summer. yesterday after a power outage, our main ATM circuit went down causing loss of internet & WAN access. at first i thought it our firewall had been hacked or it was a DOS attack but when i checked, everything was [...]

my OWA is SLOWA

more work notes: internal access to OWA via http://mail.mydomain.com/exchange is slow when the computer is logged onto the domain and using a proxy server, however IE is set to not use proxy for local hosts.
the interesting thing is that access to OWA via http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange works fine (and that’s my current workaround). likewise, http://mail.mydomain.com/exchange is fine [...]

i am totally and utterly fried. the following are just some quick notes on my past 48 hours at work. to make a long story short, my mail server completely flatlined on me yesterday, i ran into every possible pitfall during the restoration process, pushing my stress level to its limit. on the plus side, [...]

rankilicious

with the coming of a new school year comes yet another new MS vulnerability exploit that can lead to the insertion of a trojan known as ranky.x that sends out spam from an unknown TCP port. from cbl.abuseseat.org:

Commencing August 13th, we have been seeing large numbers of CBL detections caused by the vulnerabilities referenced in [...]

from fireflyfans.net:
On Monday FOX posted shows on iTunes. These shows include new hits like “24″ and “Prison Break.” If you, however, click on FOX TV Classics, there you’ll find the whole gang. Firefly episodes, all of them. It’s kind of a big deal.
episodes are listed in the original and incorrect fox airing order. the correct [...]

i returned the two extra firefly box sets i got for xmas and picked up a nintendo ds. wi-fi, touchscreen, microphone and backwards compatibility in one little unit - it’s an amazing little piece of technology (even though the one i picked up has a dead pixel right near the center of the screen). [...]
