6/30 - another reason i got out of cincinnati so early was because i had a long day of driving ahead of me. from there to midlothian va is about nine hours and i didn’t want get stuck in rush hour traffic. it takes a LONG time to get out of ohio but there are some rural sections with lots of hills that are fun to drive through. with about 20 miles to go before entering west virginia, i noticed that a police car wanted me to get over a lane so that he could pass me but i was blocked in front and to my right. i honked my horn for the car ahead to speed up or get out of the way so that i could do the same. once i was able to get over to the right lane, the same cop car followed me and turned on his lights. i was aghast; i was doing 70 mph and the speed limit was 65. so i pull over, and the cop comes up to my window:

“so what’s the hurry?”
“what’s the hurry? i was barely going five miles over the speed limit!”
“i clocked you doing 70 MPH for the past fifteen minutes.”
“i know, that’s what my cruise control was set to!”
“speed limit’s 55 MPH round here, son.”
“since when? it was 65 MPH the last time i checked.”
“since about ten miles back, i guess you missed the SEVEN speed limit signs that were posted.”
“…”

a few minutes later, i was back on the road with a $139 speeding ticket from the town of hanging rock, OH threatening to send the granola bar that was digesting in my stomach back up my esophagus. a few days ago i googled “hanging rock” and “speed trap” and found two really interesting items:

According to the latest state audits, several villages got more money from mayor’s court than property taxes, including Risingsun and Portage in Wood County. In Hanging Rock in southern Ohio, the town recorded $109,186 in mayor’s court receipts in 2000 compared with $3,106 in property taxes, according to state audits.

…State Rep. Larry Wolpert (R., Hilliard) said it’s disheartening to see towns get most of their money from traffic fines in mayor’s court. - toldedoblade.com

and then this happened two days later on the same tiny stretch of highway:

HANGING ROCK, Ohio - Two professional wrestlers stopped for speeding were caught with drugs, the State Highway Patrol said.

Robert Szatowski, known as “Rob Van Dam” and Terry Brunk, known as “Sabu,” were stopped on U.S. 52 at 10:15 p.m. Sunday near this southern Ohio town after appearing at a match in Huntington, W.Va., Sgt. Chris Smith said on Monday.

Both appear on Extreme Championship Wrestling, a part of the World Wrestling Entertainment league. Szatowski is the reigning champion of the ECW and the WWE. Calls were not answered Monday at the WWE corporate offices.

The trooper, who searched the car after smelling marijuana, found 18 grams of marijuana and five tablets of Vicodin, a prescription painkiller, with Szatowski. Brunk had a pipe used to smoke marijuana and nine pills. Smith said he didn’t know what type of drug the pills were.

Both were charged with drug abuse. Szatowski also was accused of possession of marijuana and Brunk was charged with having drug paraphernalia.

The men were cited and posted bond. They were to be arraigned Thursday morning in Ironton Municipal Court and likely will be fined, Smith said. - ohio.com

isn’t that crazy? rob van dam’s last name is szatowski! who’d a thunk it?
